What is a VPS?
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual server created by splitting a powerful physical machine into independent partitions with virtualization software. Each VPS has its own operating system, IP address, RAM, disk space and share of CPU. When you reboot your VPS, change installed software or add a firewall rule, only your server is affected.
On shared hosting, hundreds of websites run on the same operating system and share the same resources, so one site's traffic spike can slow down all the others. A VPS solves this by giving you full root access and an isolated environment, at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated server. That is why VPS is the most popular virtual server solution for projects that have outgrown shared hosting.
Limitsiz Bulut cloud VPS plans come with NVMe storage, a 1 Gbit unmetered network connection, DDoS protection and daily automatic backups. Every plan also includes a personally assigned account representative.
Who is a VPS for?
- Websites hitting shared hosting limits: if you see "resource limit reached" warnings, slow pages or restrictions on PHP versions and extensions, it is time to move to a VPS.
- Developers and start-ups: an ideal staging and production environment for Node.js, Python, Go, Docker, Redis and other technologies you cannot run on shared hosting.
- Agencies and freelancers: manage multiple client websites on one server with your own control panel.
- SMBs: an affordable platform for your corporate website, CRM, ticketing system, VPN or file sharing.
- Students and aspiring sysadmins: the most economical way to learn Linux, networking and security on a real server.
That said, not every project needs a VPS. If you have a simple brochure site and never want to touch server administration, shared hosting may be more practical. For busy game servers or workloads that keep the CPU constantly busy, a VDS with dedicated cores is the better choice. A VPS sits at the most balanced price-to-performance point between those two extremes.
VPS server pricing in 2026
The table below lists Limitsiz Bulut's current cloud VPS plans. Prices are monthly and exclude VAT. Every plan includes NVMe storage, 1 Gbit unmetered traffic, free setup and a choice of operating system.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | NVMe Disk | Monthly Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS Small – Starter | 2 vCPU | 2 GB | 25 GB | ₺224.53 |
| VPS Medium – Growing projects | 2 vCPU | 4 GB | 50 GB | ₺277.01 |
| VPS Large – High performance | 4 vCPU | 8 GB | 80 GB | ₺329.94 |
| VPS Super – Enterprise | 6 vCPU | 16 GB | 160 GB | ₺400.22 |
Do not compare VPS offers on the monthly price alone. Disk type (NVMe or SATA SSD?), traffic quotas, whether backups are included, DDoS protection and support quality all shape the total cost. A VPS that looks very cheap can become expensive once paid backups and traffic overage fees are added. We cover every pricing factor in detail in our article on VPS server prices in 2026.
VPS vs shared hosting vs VDS
To choose the right platform, it helps to understand the key differences between the three most popular options:
| Criterion | Shared Hosting | VPS | VDS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resources | Shared with hundreds of sites | Virtually isolated | Dedicated cores |
| Root access | No | Yes | Yes |
| Software freedom | Limited | Full | Full |
| Performance | Variable | Good | High and consistent |
| Technical skill needed | Low | Medium | Medium |
| Cost | Lowest | Affordable | Mid-range |
In short: if you have a single WordPress site and do not want to manage a server, shared hosting is enough. If you want to install your own software, manage several projects or get more consistent performance, a VPS is the right next step. For game servers, heavy databases, ERP or projects that need a Turkey location, a VDS server with dedicated cores is a better fit. Torn between the two? Read our VDS or VPS? comparison.
Linux distributions and choosing an OS for your VPS
You choose your operating system when ordering and can reinstall it from the panel at any time. The most popular options are:
- Ubuntu Server (LTS): the most popular choice for beginners and developers thanks to its large community and up-to-date packages. Ideal for Docker, Node.js and Python projects.
- Debian: known for stability and a light footprint; a reliable choice for long-running production servers.
- AlmaLinux / Rocky Linux: RHEL-compatible, enterprise-grade distributions frequently used with control panels such as cPanel, DirectAdmin and CyberPanel.
- Windows Server: suited to applications that need .NET, MSSQL or remote desktop (RDP). Because Windows uses more RAM, we recommend plans with at least 4 GB.
If you prefer a control panel, install cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, aaPanel or CyberPanel and manage your server from a web interface.
Should you use a control panel on your VPS?
If you are not comfortable on the command line, or you will manage several websites, email accounts and databases, a control panel makes life much easier. cPanel and Plesk are mature, licensed, full-featured solutions, while aaPanel, CyberPanel and HestiaCP are free alternatives. On the other hand, if you only run a single application or Docker-based services, a lean setup without a panel uses less RAM and is more secure. If you do install a panel, account for its own resource usage and choose a plan with at least 2–4 GB of RAM.
VPS use cases
- Websites and WordPress: much faster WordPress sites than on shared hosting with LiteSpeed/OpenLiteSpeed, Nginx and Redis caching.
- Web applications and APIs: deploy Laravel, Django, Express or Next.js apps easily with Docker.
- Testing and staging: try new releases without touching your live system.
- VPN and proxy: set up a secure access point for your team with WireGuard or OpenVPN.
- Automation and bots: keep Telegram/Discord bots, cron jobs and data-collection scripts running 24/7.
- Small game servers: host Minecraft or similar lightweight game servers for your friends. For large communities we recommend a VDS.
- Git, CI/CD and monitoring: run Gitea, Jenkins, Uptime Kuma or Grafana on your own server.
Scalability: grow your VPS with your project
One of the biggest advantages of a VPS is scalability. Start with a small plan and upgrade CPU, RAM and disk to a larger plan as your traffic and resource needs grow. You do not need to migrate your site to another server; your data stays where it is.
To know when to scale, keep an eye on the monitoring graphs in your panel. If CPU usage stays above 80% for long periods, RAM is constantly full or swap usage keeps rising, it is time to upgrade. When your project needs consistent core performance, move to a VDS; when you need hardware that is entirely yours, step up to a dedicated server.
VPS location: Europe VPS or a Turkey location?
Limitsiz Bulut VPS servers are hosted in our European (Amsterdam) data center. With strong international connectivity, the European location is ideal for websites, APIs and SaaS projects serving a global audience. If most of your users are in Turkey and every millisecond counts, consider our Turkey (Istanbul) VDS servers with ~3–8 ms latency; if you need dedicated resources in Europe, take a look at our Germany VDS plans. For more detail, read our guide to choosing a server location.
How to move from shared hosting to a VPS
Moving from shared hosting to a VPS is less complicated than it looks. With a little planning, you can switch to your new server without any downtime:
- Take inventory: list your websites, databases, email accounts, cron jobs, SSL certificates and DNS records.
- Prepare the new server: install the operating system and your preferred control panel, and match the PHP version and extensions to your old environment.
- Copy your data: transfer files and databases; if you use cPanel, a full backup and restore speeds things up.
- Test: edit your computer's hosts file to check the site on the new server before changing DNS.
- Point DNS: lower the TTL before the switch, then update your A records to the new IP address.
Prefer not to deal with any of this? Limitsiz Bulut experts migrate your site or server from another provider free of charge and without downtime. If you want to separate email from your web server, a migration is also a good moment to switch to our business email service.
Common mistakes when renting a VPS
- Looking only at the price: ignore disk type, traffic quotas, backups and support quality, and the cheapest plan can become the most expensive in the long run.
- Choosing a plan that is too small: running out of RAM leads to swapping and serious slowdowns. Leave headroom if you plan to run Windows or a control panel.
- Leaving backups entirely to the provider: automatic backups are a great safety net, but keep a copy of critical data in external storage you control.
- Postponing security: a server left on default settings faces automated scans from the moment it goes online.
- Ignoring location: a data center far from your audience adds latency to every request, so decide where your users are from the start.
Essential VPS security steps
- Update the system at first login (
apt update && apt upgradeordnf update). - Disable root password login and use SSH key authentication.
- Open only the ports you need in your firewall (UFW, firewalld).
- Block brute-force attempts with tools such as Fail2ban.
- In addition to automatic backups, keep a copy of critical data in an external location.
Limitsiz Bulut VPS servers include network-level DDoS protection and a panel-managed firewall; in-server security configuration, however, remains your responsibility.
How to choose the right VPS plan
- A single WordPress or corporate site: VPS Small or VPS Medium.
- Multiple sites, WooCommerce or a control panel: VPS Medium or VPS Large.
- Multiple Docker services, databases and heavy API traffic: VPS Large or VPS Super.
- Windows Server: at least VPS Medium (4 GB RAM).
