What is DV SSL?
DV (Domain Validation) SSL is a certificate type where the certificate authority only verifies that you control the domain name. Validation is done by email, a DNS record or a file uploaded to your server; no documents are required. That is why the certificate is usually issued within minutes.
DV SSL encrypts traffic between the browser and your server with the same strength as OV and EV certificates. The difference lies in the identity information inside the certificate: a DV certificate contains only the domain name, not a company name.
Why do you need an SSL certificate?
- Browser warnings: modern browsers show a “Not Secure” warning on pages without HTTPS, which discourages visitors from filling in forms.
- Data security: login details, contact forms and personal data are never sent unencrypted. For sites processing personal data under KVKK (Turkish Personal Data Protection Law), it is a basic technical safeguard.
- SEO: Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, and fast protocols such as HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 require HTTPS in practice.
- Trust and conversions: visitors hesitate to leave information on sites without the padlock.
Who is DV SSL for?
DV SSL is enough for blogs, personal sites, business brochure sites, portfolios, landing pages and small business sites that do not collect sensitive payment details. If you want visitors to see your company identity in the certificate, a business OV/EV SSL is the better choice; if you run many subdomains, choose a Wildcard SSL.

Which DV SSL brand should you choose?
Technically, all DV certificates use the same encryption standard and are trusted by all modern browsers. These criteria decide:
- Budget: the most economical option is Certum Commercial DV; the most popular is Sectigo Domain SSL.
- Warranty: the limit the certificate authority commits to end users if a certificate is mis-issued. Thawte DV Flex offers the highest warranty on this list.
- Brand recognition: if your corporate clients prefer a particular certificate authority (for example GlobalSign or DigiCert group brands), choose accordingly.
- Site seal: if you want to show a trust seal on payment or form pages, check the brand’s seal options.
Free SSL or paid DV SSL?
| Criteria | Free SSL (Let's Encrypt / AutoSSL) | Paid DV SSL |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption | Same | Same |
| Validity | 90 days, auto-renewed | Annual subscription, reissued throughout |
| Warranty | None | $10,000 – $500,000 |
| Site seal | None | Available depending on brand |
| Support | Community | Expert help with CSR and installation |
| Best for | Sites on hosting plans | Own servers, corporate needs, warranty expectations |
Free SSL is already included in our WordPress hosting and unlimited hosting plans. A paid certificate makes sense when you want a warranty, a site seal or professional support on your own server (for example a VPS server).
What changed for SSL lifetimes in 2026?
Under a decision adopted by the CA/Browser Forum, certificate lifetimes are being shortened in stages:
- From 15 March 2026: a maximum of 200 days
- From 15 March 2027: a maximum of 100 days
- From 15 March 2029: a maximum of 47 days
This does not mean the SSL you buy annually becomes invalid. You buy the certificate as an annual subscription; during the subscription it is reissued free of charge and reinstalled on your server. Shorter lifetimes make automatic renewal and easy tracking more important than ever.
Domain validation methods
For a DV certificate, the certificate authority confirms that you control the domain using one of three methods. Which one suits you depends on how much access you have to your domain and server.
| Method | How it works | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| You click an approval link sent to addresses such as admin@ or webmaster@ | If you can create mailboxes on the domain | |
| DNS record | You add the given TXT or CNAME record to the DNS zone | If you manage DNS; the best choice for automation |
| File (HTTP) | You upload the given file to a specific folder on the site | If you can upload files to the server (not available for Wildcards) |
With certificate lifetimes getting shorter, we recommend DNS validation so you do not have to repeat manual steps at every reissue. Our technical team also helps Limitsiz Bulut customers with validation.
Buying and installation steps
- Generate a CSR: create a certificate signing request (CSR) and private key on your server or control panel (cPanel, Plesk). Never share the private key.
- Choose a certificate and check out: paste the CSR into the order form.
- Validate the domain: choose an authorised email address such as admin@, a DNS TXT/CNAME record or a validation file uploaded to the server.
- Install the certificate: upload the certificate and intermediate (CA bundle) files to the server. Installation is free for Limitsiz Bulut hosting customers.
- Redirect to HTTPS: 301-redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS and check that no mixed content (files loaded over http://) remains.
Post-installation tips
- Verify the HTTPS version in Google Search Console and update your sitemap URL.
- Make sure canonical tags and internal links start with https://.
- Check that only TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are enabled.
- Add the expiry date to your calendar or use automatic renewal.
- Use encrypted connections for email on your domain too; see our business email solutions for professional mail.
Conclusion
DV SSL is the cornerstone of security for almost every website: it is issued quickly, needs no paperwork and is affordable. If you are starting a new project, pick your domain name first, then choose the certificate that fits your needs. Follow our blog for more on SSL and web security.
