What is a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is a physical machine in a data center whose entire hardware is assigned to a single customer. The processor, memory, disks and network card belong to you alone; no other customer, virtual server or shared virtualization layer runs on the same machine. That is why dedicated servers are also known as bare metal servers.
When you rent a dedicated server, you do not have to buy hardware, rack it in a data center or deal with power, cooling and connectivity. Limitsiz Bulut prepares the server in the configuration you choose, installs the operating system and hands it over with IPMI / iDRAC remote management access. Replacing failed hardware is our responsibility.
With no virtualization layer, you get every bit of performance the hardware can deliver. You can even install Proxmox, VMware ESXi or Hyper-V to split your dedicated server into your own virtual machines and build a private cloud.
When do you need a dedicated server?
Not every project needs a dedicated server; most websites and applications run comfortably on a VDS or VPS. However, if any of the following applies to you, a dedicated server is the right investment:
- Sustained high CPU usage: video processing, build servers, large game-server networks or AI inference workloads that keep the processor busy all day.
- Large databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL or MSSQL databases of hundreds of gigabytes that need plenty of RAM and NVMe RAID performance.
- High-traffic e-commerce and media sites: platforms serving tens of thousands of concurrent users during campaigns.
- Your own virtualization platform: reselling VPS, running in-house virtual machines or building a test lab.
- Compliance and isolation: finance, healthcare or public-sector projects where data must not share hardware with other customers.
- Licensing: some enterprise software is licensed per physical core or socket, so full control of the hardware can reduce costs.
Signs you have outgrown your VDS
If you already use a VDS, these signs suggest it is time to move to a dedicated server: CPU usage stays above 80% for long periods even on the largest VDS plan, disk reads climb because your database no longer fits in RAM, running several large VDS instances separately costs more than one powerful server, or your customers or auditors require hardware-level isolation. Before you reach that point, we recommend measuring the bottleneck on your current server and planning your growth a few months ahead.
Dedicated server vs VDS vs VPS
| Criterion | Dedicated Server | VDS | VPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Entirely yours | Dedicated virtual resources | Isolated virtual resources |
| Performance | Maximum (bare metal) | High | Good |
| Run your own hypervisor | Yes | No | No |
| IPMI / BIOS access | Yes | No | No |
| Delivery time | 24–72 hours | Instant | Instant |
| Scaling | Hardware change | Plan upgrade | Plan upgrade |
In short, if flexibility and fast scaling are your priorities, choose a VDS; if you need the whole machine, maximum raw performance and BIOS-level control, choose a dedicated server. For the differences between VDS and VPS, see our article VDS or VPS?.
Choosing hardware: CPU, RAM, storage and RAID
Processor (CPU)
- High-frequency CPUs (Intel Xeon E series, AMD Ryzen 9): ideal for game servers, PHP-based websites and database workloads where single-core performance matters.
- Many-core server CPUs (AMD EPYC, Intel Xeon Gold): suited to virtualization, container clusters, heavy parallel processing and applications serving many concurrent users.
Memory (RAM)
For critical workloads, choose error-correcting ECC RAM; it prevents data corruption and unexpected crashes caused by memory errors. On database servers, having enough RAM to keep your hot data set in cache multiplies performance. If you plan to virtualize, add a 20–30% margin to the combined RAM of all the virtual machines you intend to run.
Storage and RAID
- NVMe SSD: far higher IOPS and lower latency than SATA SSD; now the standard for databases and virtualization.
- RAID 1 (mirroring): two disks hold identical copies, so the server keeps running if one fails. The most practical redundancy option for most projects.
- RAID 10: needs at least four disks and provides both speed (striping) and redundancy (mirroring); recommended for heavy database and virtualization servers.
Network and port speed
A 1 Gbps port is sufficient for standard projects. For video streaming, large file distribution, backup targets or heavy API traffic, consider the 10 Gbps port option.
Colocation or a rented dedicated server?
Colocation means placing a server you have purchased in a data center and paying only for rack space, power and connectivity. With a rented dedicated server, the hardware belongs to the provider and you pay a monthly fee to use it.
| Criterion | Rented Server | Colocation |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront investment | None | Hardware purchase |
| Hardware failure | Provider replaces parts | Your responsibility |
| Hardware refresh | Switch plans | New investment |
| Customization | Wide choice | Complete freedom |
| Best for | Most businesses | Owners of special hardware |
If you would rather not tie up capital in hardware or handle failures and part replacements, a rented dedicated server is the better deal. If you already own specialised hardware or plan very long-term use, colocation can make sense.
What affects dedicated server pricing?
Dedicated server pricing depends on the CPU model and core count, RAM capacity and type (DDR4/DDR5, ECC), number and size of disks, RAID layout, port speed, additional IP requirements and location. Options range from entry-level Intel Xeon E configurations to dual-socket or high-core-count AMD EPYC servers to suit different budgets. You can see current starting prices and stock status in the server list above. If you need a configuration that is not listed, we will prepare a custom quote.
When calculating total cost, remember management time: OS updates, security and monitoring on a dedicated server are handled by your team. For projects that want to start with a smaller budget, our guide to VDS server prices in 2026 is a useful point of comparison.
Dedicated server locations
Our dedicated servers are available in Turkey (Istanbul) and Germany (Frankfurt), in Tier III data centers with redundant power, cooling and networking. The Turkey location gives local users the lowest latency and keeps data in-country, while Frankfurt, close to one of Europe's most important internet exchanges, is a strong choice for international projects. If you need virtual yet dedicated resources in Europe, take a look at our Germany VDS plans. See our location guide for help choosing, and our technical infrastructure page for details on our data centers.
Ordering, setup and delivery
- Pick a location and a server from the list, or contact us for a custom configuration.
- Choose your operating system (Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux or Windows Server) and any additional IPs.
- Your server goes through hardware testing, RAID is configured and the operating system is installed free of charge.
- In-stock servers are typically delivered within 24–72 hours with the IP address, admin credentials and IPMI / iDRAC access.
- After delivery, finish configuring your firewall, monitoring and backups, then take your server live.
Managing and securing a dedicated server
A dedicated server gives you the most control, and with that control comes responsibility. We recommend the following steps to keep your server secure and stable:
- Protect IPMI / iDRAC access: the remote management interface is the key to your server. Change default passwords, use strong credentials and, where possible, restrict access to specific IP addresses.
- Update regularly: alongside OS and kernel updates, keep track of BIOS and firmware updates.
- Watch disk health: check SMART values and RAID status regularly, and open a support ticket as soon as you notice a degraded RAID array.
- Set up monitoring: use Zabbix, Prometheus, Netdata or Uptime Kuma to track CPU temperature, resource usage and service availability 24/7, with alerts when thresholds are crossed.
- Apply layered security: in addition to network-level DDoS protection, use a server firewall, SSH key authentication and tools such as Fail2ban.
- Keep backups elsewhere: store backups on a different server or storage service, not on the same machine's disks.
Build your own private cloud on a dedicated server
One of the most powerful ways to use a dedicated server is to install a virtualization platform and build your own private cloud. With open-source solutions such as Proxmox VE, you can split one powerful server into dozens of virtual machines and containers and run your web, database, test and internal application servers in isolation from one another. Compared with renting many small virtual servers, this lets you use resources more efficiently and share them between virtual machines however you like.
For a private cloud, choose a many-core processor, plenty of ECC RAM and a RAID 10 NVMe configuration; you can request an additional IPv4 or IPv6 block to give your virtual machines their own addresses.
Common mistakes when renting a dedicated server
- Over-buying hardware: choosing the most powerful server for an unmeasured need strains your budget. Start by measuring your current resource usage.
- Treating RAID as a backup: RAID protects against disk failure; it will not bring back deleted or encrypted data.
- Relying on a single server: for critical services, plan a second server, load balancing or at least a fast recovery plan.
- Forgetting the management workload: the software side of a dedicated server is your responsibility, so include your team's time in the cost.
Dedicated server checklist
- Does your workload need high single-core speed or many cores?
- How much RAM do your database and applications need, and is ECC a must?
- RAID 1 or RAID 10? Is your off-server backup plan ready?
- Is a 1 Gbps port enough, or do you need 10 Gbps?
- Which location is closest to your users: Istanbul or Frankfurt?
- Do you need DDoS protection and additional IPv4 / IPv6 addresses?
- Will your own team manage the server, and how much technical support do you need?
